Secretariat

Randall Wallace’s career started off quite differently than most screenwriters’ in the business. After writing for years in his youth, Wallace attended Duke as a seminary student instead of pursuing a career as a screenwriter or author; a part of his life he later credits as an influence on his approach to filmmaking. He eventually left the seminary to become a songwriter but during this time he also worked as a novelist and television scribe. Wallace was first noticed as a prominent person in screenwriting when he wrote 1995s script for Braveheart. His work on the film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original screenplay and a Writers Guild of America award for Best Screenplay Adapted Directly for the Screen. Wallace continued writing commercially successful movies such as Pearl Harbor and made his directorial debut with The Man in the Iron Mask and We Were Soldiers.

In 1999 Wallace created Wheelhouse Entertainment, a production company to create original films, music, videogames and books based on the classic values of love, courage, and honor. Throughout his career Wallace became a New York Times bestselling author of seven novels and an acclaimed lyricist. He created the hymn Mansions of the Lord which was performed at President Ronald Regan’s national funeral.

In 2010 Wallace signed on to direct Disney’s Secretariat, story of the 1973 Triple Crown Winner. Diane Lane leads the cast as Penny Chenery, wife and mother who agrees to take over her father’s Meadow Stables in despite of her limited knowledge of horse-racing. With the help of their veteran trainer, Chenery forces her way into the male-dominated world of horse-racing and succeeds in fostering their first Triple Crown winner in 25 years.
