Does sitting in the back of a lecture hall say that you are a bad student to the professor?
It is also easier to sit in the back, especially if you are late. It is also easier to text and not get caught and if you are on your laptop “taking notes” it is easier to check your facebook, the score on the basketball game, or even do your online shopping!
I bring this up because a recent study by USA Today shows that where you sit in a classroom does say something about us!
Students who sit in the front tend to develop a student-to-professor relationship faster than those who choose to sit in the back. These students also tend to be the ones that participate more during discussion sections.
But interestingly enough, professors agree, just by sitting in the front rows of the class does not mean you will do better or get a higher grade. Nonetheless, they agree that the students in the front row pay more attention and are focused in lecture as opposed to those texting in the back.
Personally, I am guilty of this too. The first day of class I arrive early to get a good seat, but after day one, I tend to sit in the middle or back rows of lecture halls. If I feel comfortable with the subject being taught and I like it, I sit towards the middle. But if it is a subject such as math or science (my weakest subjects) or just a plain boring professor is teaching, I sit in the back as to not get picked on or get caught texting during lecture.
We pay a lot of money to the school in order to take these classes, so let’s get our money’s worth by sitting closer in the lecture hall and pay attention. Yes, there are boring professors and lectures, but try your best to take notes and listen.
Let your professor know who you are by sitting in front because, keep in mind, you will need recommendation letters from them when you apply to Graduate School or other programs to further your career.
