ThinkTalk Interviews Director Lone Scherfig: Ask Your Question

The ThinkTalk staff is gearing up to welcome Danish director Lone Scherfig to DC to talk about her film career and new movie An Education. Lone studied film making at the University of Copenhagen and the National Film School of Denmark and has made a name for herself with films Italian for Beginners and Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself.

Lone is coming to our studios to answer your questions about filmmaking. So far, she has bagged an impressive 22 awards and 11 nominations for her work and has tons of experience and plenty of advice to give you aspiring directors, writers and actors. In an interview with the BBC, Lone talked about how she casts her films:

I think the older I get the less I look at people's resumes. I'm more and more willing to take risks. It's about intuition. But I'm very afraid of miscasting. One miscast actor can ruin the whole film… [I learned] to let the actor not just play the role, but really to get the role, to give them enough control. That makes the acting better. So it is much more about intuition, and who do I want to be with for the two or three months of filming.

Lone's latest movie, An Education, is an adaptation of the memoir of British journalist and author Lynn Barber. It was well received at Sundance and won the World Cinema Audience Award and the World Cinema Cinematography Award. The screenplay is written by novelist Nick Hornby, who wrote the novels High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and About a Boy (which, on a side note, are amazing books. Read 'em).

An Education follows a British teenager’s coming-of-age in the post-war, pre-Beatles London suburbs. Jenny a bright schoolgirl is torn between studying for a place at Oxford and the more exciting alternative offered to her by a charismatic older man. The trailer looks great- check it out below. We're looking forward to seeing the film and being able to talk to Lone about her directing career.

So here’s your chance to ask Lone about directing, screenwriting, how she started her career or any other burning questions you might have. Check out the instructions on how to ask your question. It’s quick and painless, we promise. The deadline to submit a question for Lone is September 18, so don’t take too long!
