Acclaimed director Danny Boyle joined the Director’s Cut recently to discuss his newest film Slumdog Millionaire. The film tells the story of an 18 year-old orphan who receives the chance of a lifetime by appearing on India’s most popular game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.†The well-told story deals largely with fate, destiny, friendship, and love. Slumdog Millionaire won the People’s Choice Award at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and has been met with critical and popular acclaim.
We had some great student questions and were able to talk to Danny about everything from filming in the “Maximum City†of Mumbai (this was before the horrific events of last week) to how he got his start in the film industry. If you are not familiar with Danny Boyle, he is responsible for the critical and box-office success of a number of films, including Trainspotting, The Beach, and 28 Days Later.
To be honest, Danny was one of the most engaging, open, and candid guests I’ve had the chance to interview. One of the more inspiring aspects of his career is his path to success. Danny Boyle paid his dues and truly took the long road from his native England to Hollywood. He began working in theater shortly after attending college. From theater he moved on to television, as a producer for the BBC in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. He then caught a break when offered the chance to direct his first feature film Shallow Grave. The film was a success and Danny has kept producing quality entertainment ever since.
We talk about all of this, and more, with excellent insight from the source himself. So go check out ThinkTalk’s interview with director Danny Boyle on the Director’s Cut.
UPDATE: Slumdog was named Best Picture of 2008 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. The NBR launches the movie awards season each year with its picks, making Slumdog a heavy contender for a Best Picture nom and award. The film also won a best adapted screenplay for writer Simon Beaufoy (whom Danny mentions in our interview as the reason he chose to direct the film) and breakthrough performance for star Dev Patel. Congrats!
