Don’t Let Your Senior Year Pass You By

This is your senior year.  The end all be all. As much as you want to spend time with your best friends and savor every moment of campus life, don’t forget to branch out there.  Make yourself a realistic list of things you want to be able to accomplish after graduating from school.  Then backtrack through that list and figure out what you need to do to get from point A (senior year of college) to point B (hopefully one of the first To-Dos on your list was to be employed or else the following won’t make sense).  Make another list of To-Dos on how you can prepare from getting from point A to point B.  It should look something like this:

  1. Go To Class: As much as you want to skip your final class of the day and just hang out with your friends, the last thing you want to do is fail a class or damage your GPA. You’re so close to finishing up your college career and finishing it on a positive note is the best way to end it.  If you’re having issues in your class go to your professor or TA and make a game plan on how you are going to fix it and move on from there.
  2. Work on Your Resume: Take a look at your resume (or create your resume).  Is it lacking some substance? If so figure out what some of your passions or interests are and find ways to turn those into activities that will fit well on your resume.  Look up service opportunities that sound interesting to you and just get to it.  These will serve well on your resume and help you learn skills that may help you in your future work place.
  3. Meet New People: Take any chance you can get to meet new people.  This is probably the easiest To-Do on the list.  If you’re unsure on where to start, go to your advisor or campus career office.  They will always have great suggestions on where to meet people in a professional environment.  If your work schedule is really busy you could always look for an internship that is part time and flexible to work with your class schedule.  You could also meet people at one of your volunteer opportunities or join a professional student organization.  Your advisor can also offer you the name of alumni that you could contact for advice and tips on how to get started on the job search.
  4. Look Into Your Future: No, this one does not involve a crystal ball.  Simply take a look back over your first list on where you see yourself after graduation.  If you’re going to school in Boston but you feel the warm breeze of southern California calling your name, start looking into what jobs are offered there, living situations, and if you know anyone out there, see if you could set up a visit.  The hardest transition you will make is going from a college environment into your first job.  Be sure that you have a good feel for where you think you want to be before you uproot your entire life and move.  If you’re not happy with your living environment it will probably take a toll on your work environment as well.

It is best to prepare yourself now rather than walking into the workforce struggling to keep up with everyone else around you.  A few small steps now will most certainly pay off in the long run.  Keep up the hard work and you’ll be done with it before you even know it!
