I have always been interested in media and continue to maintain an interest in traditional journalism. It is no secret that the newspaper industry is in trouble and there is certainly no lack of opinion on why this is happening and how to fix it. So I am certainly not going to through my hat into that ring right now.

But last night's Daily Show certainly served as a not-to-subtle reminder of what the true role of a free press is and what can happen when a news organization is perceived to have compromised values. If you haven't been following the Daily Show (start now!), host Jon Stewart has been critiquing CNBC for a perception of being a bit to cozy with the people they cover - and how that may compromise CNBC's accountability. The conversation came to a head last night as Stewart devoted the entire show (a first, I believe) to a conversation with CNBC host Jim Cramer.

I think this was a reasoned discussion that highlighted the role that a news organization plays in regards to the topics it covers. For you journalism students out there, you would be wise to watch this interview and take note of the central theme of the discussion: The topics news organizations cover should not serve to entertain viewers. These are real issues that have real effects on real people and should be treated as such.
