Welcome to the Daily Roundup. Each day at the ThinkTalk Blog we will post some links that we find informative, interesting, or just plain funny. The goal is to let you know what else is going on out there, and ultimately help you with the development of your career.
What an amazing Super Bowl? It seems this game gets better and better each year . . . even if one of the worst franchises in football history is playing. I'm sure many of you saw this last night - unless you live in a cave (or perhaps some Land of the Lost).
So, how does the Super Bowl tie into your career. Well, it could be something like "10 Recruiting lessons that you can learn from the Super Bowl". But, of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention the infamous commercials. Jobacle does a nice job of rounding up the career-related ads from last night. Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and Hyundai all had ads last night. My favorite was CareerBuilder's (to the right ->).
Now I know how Nellie must feel with an office next to mine. Maybe she could cope, with a batch of The Links . . .
Campus Calm Has:
Advice for students on starting your job search. The post advises students to get experience and to get it right now. Volunteer at non-profits, volunteer in class, volunteer after class, and take as many leadership roles as possible. I think this is sound advice. At some point you have to make a grown up decision that you can either sit in your room watching TV or you can get out and do whatever it takes to be successful.
Business Week Provides:
An illustrated collection of 25 tips to avoid career burnout (via @DailyCareerTips). My favorite is Be a Better Person. "The personal IS the professional. There is no disconnect. Who you are in private eventually filters into your work, where every flaw is magnified." Plus the picture is hilarious.
ere.net Updates:
The confusion over the performance of some internet job search sites. "Oops! Those numbers that comScore, the Internet traffic counter, released last week showing Yahoo’s HotJobs in the number two position were not quite right. The numbers have been updated and now show Monster in 2nd place behind CareerBuilder." We relayed the initial numbers as well, so I thought including this update would be prudent.
Financial Aid Podcasts Analyzes:
The government's decision to commit $60 billion to aid the student loan market (via @cspenn). The article argues that while this move will free up some money and could "bring companies back in the game who had been on the sidelines since the credit markets went south," it is still a bad investment to take out these loans unless you absolutely need them. There is a lot of detail in this piece that is too much for a short summary here . . . so go check it out.
Employee Evolution Offers:
A free e-book on career blogging for students. "Despite being extremely tech-savvy, college students typically live in a giant bubble. They associate with people at school, they go to the bars on campus, they wear sweat pants every day of the week, and the only social media they use is posting last night’s pictures on Facebook. Unfortunately, those giant bubbles need to burst." College is a self-contained environment. Enhance your network through off-campus jobs and internships, and also online through blogging. This e-book is aimed at parents and faculty, but it is for the benefit of students, so it may be worth checking out.
The New Yorker Goes:
"Inside a movie marketer's playbook" (via TNR's The Plank). This in depth (read: long) piece takes a look at what it takes to market a film in Hollywood today. There are a number of useful behind the scene peeks at the industry for anyone interested in marketing, PR, directing or acting. What stuck out most, however was this: "'If we weren’t making decisions based on marketability, John Malkovich would be in every movie,' a top studio marketer says. 'Great actor, but not someone you want to see half-naked in the sheets next to Angelina Jolie.'..." The piece shows you just how much an influence marketers have on the final product. Also, I'd love to see Malky next to AJ. I've said too much.
