I am a huge college basketball fan. In college I provided play-by-play via the internet for American University, where I did my undergrad. That was one of the coolest jobs I ever had that I received zero monetary compensation for (but I did get to eat a ton of free Booeymonger, a sponsor). I still follow the team closely and was thrilled when the Eagles won their first Patriot League tournament last year to make their first trip to the NCAA tournament. The game against Tennessee was a barn burner and just a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch. Good times all around.

I bring this up because I came across a great post at YourHRGuy.com comparing Greg Oden to training management failure. Oden was a dominant college bigman (for one year only), who has struggled in the pros, missing his entire rookie year with a knee injury and battling numerous injuries this year.

This year, the excitement built up again and after an up and down half season, people are already calling him a bust. The guy is four months into a long NBA career and you’ve already made that determination? He’s a trainee right now! The HR person inside of me perks up here though. This happens all of the time in corporate America and this is a great example of it reasons why it is such a short coming of the organization, not the employee.

"It seems simple — almost trivial — but there are very few occupations that don’t benefit from strong writing abilities these days. Think of how many emails are sent a day. Think of how much time is wasted by people who can’t string a coherent sentence together within those emails and thus cause titanic communication headaches." So, whatever you do, don't fail English.

It's not about whether you are a good fit for the job, it's whether the job is a good fit for you. It's "a fact finding mission not an interrogation." Do your homework, and if you can't find an answer to your question, ask it during the interview.
