Welcome to the Daily Roundup. Each day at the ThinkTalk Blog we will post some links that we find informative, interesting, or just plain funny. The goal is to let you know what else is going on out there, and ultimately help you with the development of your career.
We have a new President. One who promises hope and change. And President Barack Obama did not wait long to begin this process. The Obama administration has revamped WhiteHouse.gov, hiring Macon Phillips as New Media Director. Yesterday Phillips introduced a new blog, digital briefing room and email alert system.
Personally, I love this idea. I think it signals the type of openness and transparency that the country has asked for and sorely needed. I added the blog's RSS to my reader and will even be following via Twitter. What I think will be most interesting will be to see how the administration handles this openness once the initial novelty and fervor dies down. If the Dow tanks another 300 points will Phillips be tweeting "all is well, remain calm."?
And, in case you doubt the excitement this new administration has garnered in Washington DC, Popular Mechanics has a satellite view of the Capitol during the inauguration. Heady times indeed.
Maybe you have yet to read the links, "But know this America, they will be read!"
Miriam Salpeter Explores:
How you control your job hunting destiny. I am a fan and will occasionally link to Keppie Careers. But, I did not know Miriam had a column for examiner.com until she Tweeted in. Chalk one up for social media. Oh yeah, and check out the article, cause ya know, that has some good points about, like, job stuff.
Alexandra Levit Asks:
Have you taken the Myers Briggs? Myers and Briggs? Aren't those the guys from Lethal Weapon? Just kidding. If you think I don't know that their names are Murtaugh and Riggs, then you don't know me at all. Wow, I cannot stay on target today. The article is about the popular personality test and how you can use the information to better understand yourself and the type of careers you may be interested in. For instance, if you are outgoing, capable, and psychopathic, perhaps you are best situated to be an evil henchman.
Satisfying Career - Happier Life Links to:
A San Jose Mercury News story about a man who uses marketing gimmicks to land job interviews. "He's a marketing guy, a guy who spends his days thinking about how to attract attention — to a company, to a cause, to himself. And so, in mid-December, the San Francisco man announced on his blog that he would perform six hours of volunteer service for every job interview he gets." That's nothing. I volunteer 8 hours per day to my "sleep for a better tomorrow" non-profit.
Cheezhead Examines:
Mobile marketing recruitment campaigns.
I think the effort made not to impugn on any of the parties involved time or personal lives is something that is very intriguing about this approach. Vanessa Dennis, the author, mentions that "mobile customers are increasingly moving towards monthly unlimited plans with their carriers for services like web and SMS, Jaising said that recruiting firms are becoming more open to the idea of SMS campaigns. But reluctance still lingers." I think this reluctance is what will cause this strategy to miss the boat. As web services on a phone become more ubiquitous, the SMS updates may become unnecessary. I do not need a text with directions if I have an iPhone with build in GPS. It will be interesting to see how this develops. I am curious if this is a prospect you would be interested in as a job candidate.“The recruiter must be in constant touch and form a personal relationship with all the players in the recruitment process, including the hiring manager, HR, and the candidate,†Jaising said. “Traditionally, during the recruitment process, the recruiter uses the phone or email to keep the candidate informed and drive him/her to the next step. Unfortunately the phone is considered invasive and access to personal email is limited during hours. Additionally, during work hours it is becoming increasingly hard to reach the hiring manager and HR due to their hectic schedules. In both cases the use of SMS and the mobile web enables the recruiter to reach their target audience at anytime, anywhere, in a non-invasive manner.â€
