Welcome to the Daily Roundup. Each day at the ThinkTalk Blog we will post some links that we find informative, interesting, or just plain funny. The goal is to let you know what else is going on out there, and ultimately help you with the development of your career.
I'm totally cribbing this video from Jason Preston's Eat Sleep Publish (thanks for the idea). The following video isn't career related, but I think it is a great way to explain the credit crisis - something you will have to have solid knowledge of once you graduate and enter the "real world." Not to mention something that is affecting the job market. Plus, the vid was designed by a grad student named Jonathan Jarvis, so there is at least a tangential college relation.
But don't worry, for those of you with career hunt questions we provide The Links . . .
Mashable Explains:
How to use Ning to land a job. If you aren't aware, Ning is a website which allows you to create your own, customizable social networks. The site was co-founded by one of Silicon Valley's most well-known figures Marc Andreessen, so you have to think it will be around for a little while and is worth at least a cursory perusing. Anyway, the always estimable Dan Schawbel points out some networks on Ning that can boost your job search.
Cheezhead Reports:
The Government is hiring. "Office assistants are most in need, with a total of 15,000 openings nationwide. Management and program analysts come in second with 14,000 job openings, while administrative staff, budget analysts, and IT management specialists round out the top five." Check out USAJobs.gov for the complete list.
The Wall Street Journal Notes:
A growing trend: Workers with big-business backgrounds aren't getting gigs at mid and small-size companies. "Smaller employers often assume big-company veterans prefer a highly structured workplace, plentiful perks and extensive organizational support. To overcome such stereotypes, you must portray yourself as a self-starter. "Just having a blue-chip company in your background isn't going to open doors like it once did at small concerns," says Fred Whelan, a San Francisco recruiter and co-author of the forthcoming book, "GOAL! Your Game Plan for Success.""
The Wall Street Journal Delves:
Into the world of online experts. "As the recession deepens, a small but growing number of people are taking their skills online, doling out expertise or performing specified tasks for a fee. Labor-at-the-keyboard sites are gaining popularity as people increasingly turn to the Web in search of work. Internet job-search sites saw a 51% rise in traffic from January 2008 to January 2009, according to comScore Media Metrix, to 26.7 million unique visitors."
