Welcome to the Daily Roundup. Each day at the ThinkTalk Blog we will post some links that we find informative, interesting, or just plain funny. The goal is to let you know what else is going on out there, and ultimately help you with the development of your career.
We are keeping with yesterday's theme of not-so-practical advice from successful individuals for today's post. Today's video (a rather long one at 20-minutes - heads up) features Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert discussing success, fear and her career on TEDTalks.
In a surprisingly candid moment (I say surprisingly because Ms. Gilbert is on a stage, in front of roughly a thousand people and with a gigantic monitor behind her head. In these moments, being candid is not what first comes to mind) she contemplates the idea that her greatest achievement in life - Eat, Pray. Love - may in fact be behind her. She has to reconcile this fear with fears she had when first starting out. What if no one likes her work? What if she can't get published? This fear of failure is something that every person must overcome to be successful. See some of Elizabeth Gilbert's other thoughts below:
(By the way, I've seen this in a numeber of places, but I didn't click on it until John Dickerson's tweet. Thanks for the tip.)
The only thing you have to fear, is . . . missing out on The Links.
Lindsey Pollack Advises:
A "best of both worlds" approach to job hunting. Lindsey uses examples from the executive in his late 40s with the sandwich board ad and the millennial who takes out sidebar ads on Facebook and concludes: "If you are looking for a job in the current recession, my best advice is to borrow from the playbook of both of these self-promoters: combine “old-fashioned†methods with new technologies."
Career Hub Provides:
Damage control for interviews gone awry. Author Janice Worthington provides useful advice in case of reference issues, short on qualifications or spotty job history. One thing is certain, according to Janice "lying or misrepresenting is never an option."
Forbes Suggests:
Proper professional attire for women. Leah Bourne's article points out mistakes professional women make when dressing and how to correct these mistakes. Sample: "Above all, remember that what flies in one office might not work so well in another. Don't be afraid to modify your clothing to fit the culture. Susan Magrino, who runs a New York-based public relations firm, alters her clothes to make them work for the office. She recently purchased a Pucci sweater and added extra hooks to make it less revealing."
The Chronicle of Higher Ed Contemplates:
The demise and aftermath of Sony BMG's Ruckus. One of the few legal alternatives to downloading free music, the site recently shut down. Wired Campus wonders: "Federal law now requires the institutions to deter students’ piracy by offering alternatives to illegal file sharing. In this changing market, what will those alternatives be?" Leave your thoughts in the comments.
BlueSkyResumes Offers:
Tips for networking . . . for people who hate networking. It's like that Mitch Hedberg line: "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." Actually, it's nothing like that.
The Resume Girl Dates:
Her career. Or something like that. I''ll let Haley Bonds explain: "Adopting the mindset that you’re ‘dating’ your career can bring some excitement into the process and relieve some of the pressure. Sure, you won’t see flowers and candy along the way, even though those office parties can definitely be a challenge for your waistline! Dating your career can ensure that you stay in the game." Hey, whatever works. I just hope these dates end better than all my others.
The Career Doctor Prescribes:
Advice on how to choose an MBA program. This is some really helpful advice on what to factor in when looking for an MBA program. If you aren't going to be attending a top-tier MBA program hare are some factors to take into consideration to narrow your choices.
