The same sorority, the same major, the same university, the same home state – the longer I study here in the United States, the more aware I get of all the different ways to connect with professionals and to establish a common ground. As a German student I see this with admiration and to some extent with jealousy. Even though I would say that contacts are as important for graduates in Germany as over here, I feel like German universities do not do a particularly good job in helping their students to get in touch with former graduates. Besides, American students seem to identify much more with their school than their German counterparts, why apparently it is out of question to help a student with the same alma mater. So, seriously, be aware of the unique opportunities you have and for which students at other places (or countries) envy you big time. The sooner you get in touch and keep in touch with alumni that work in your field of study/interest, the better. Christmas cards and other seasonal greetings won’t do any harm…
So, in order to find those valuable alumni:
Talk to your professors!
Tell them what kind of internship you are looking for or where you want to apply for an entry position. They certainly know (recent) graduates that hold positions in that field or that can at least help out with tips and further contacts.
Attend social events!
Homecoming, guest lectures, special field trips – whenever you have the chance to interact with alumni face-to-face, do it! Get their business cards and don’t hesitate to mention that you are interested in what they are doing and that you would love to come in for an informational interview some time in the future.
Join alumni networks!
Facebook groups or official college networks can establish contacts and may lead to real-life encounters. However, make sure your profile looks professional and would actually increase – rather than decrease – your chances to get invited for a job interview. Look at Lauren's recent post for more tips on how to polish up your facebook profile.
